Paris Jackson Tells Oprah: I Get Bullied!
In an exclusive interview airing Sunday, Paris Jackson confided to Oprah Winfrey that she’s still coping with her famous father’s loss but also dealing with grown-up problems like having a security detail and even bullying.
“I just like, remember something, and I smile,” she said of her father.
The 14-year-old invited Oprah into her home and her life, and if you didn’t know that her father was Michael Jackson, you’d swear she were like any other teenager who goes to school, hangs out with friends at the mall and deals with bullying.
“People have tried [to bully], but it doesn’t always work,” Paris told Oprah on OWN. “Both at school and some people try to cyber bully me.”
“They try to get to me with words, but that doesn’t really work.”
Asked if she thought people picking on her were just jealous, Paris said: “Maybe, I don’t know.” Jackson says she mostly ignores it.
Since she took the stage at Michael’s 2009 memorial service and shared her grief with the world, Paris has been in the public eye.
Because of paparazzi, celebrity gossip and the public’s interest in her, Paris has security with her 24/7, which she calls “unfortunate.”
“They think it’s kind of creepy, but some of them don’t really care,” she said of her friends’ reaction to her personal security detail. From day one, Michael Jackson was often criticized for his unorthodox parenting choices, most notably making his kids wear masks.
Paris says her childhood was shockingly normal, however:
“I was really confused. I didn’t get why I was wearing a mask. But I understand now why my dad would want our faces to be covered.”
“When we went out we wouldn’t be recognized; we could have a normal childhood. Our dad was a really normal father when he was with us.”
Now, Paris is following in her dad’s footsteps – sort of. She’s chosen to pursue acting and will star in Lundon’s Bridge and the Three Keys.
As she branches out on her own, she says it’s the memories of her ordinary life with her famous father that continue to drive her.
Once thing’s for sure: That famous father would be proud.
